KUBIKIRI ASAEMON TOKEN OSHIGATA, Suiken, 1970.

Japanese swords oshigata book by Suiken Fukunaga. Approx 450 illustrations are included.

Tameshigiri is translated as cutting test. Government sanctioned body tests were carried out by the Yamada and Yamano  family's, for several generations


The name of Yamada "Kubikiri Asaemon" is famous. The Yamada family was the execution officer of the Edo Shogunate. And the founder of Yamada family is the Yamada Sadatake. Five generation of them continued. And Their work was finished with the Meiji era.

Tameshigiri (Cutting Test) was a practical way to judge the sharpness of sword blades. Using condemned criminals, this cutting test were done by various ways. These two books written by Fukunaga Sensei show the history of Tameshigiri, its system, method, and tested blades with their oshigatas. Based on the famous Yamada Family's secretive book 'Token Oshigata' and their methods to examine the blade sharpness, many real photos and pictures are well illustrated. Hundreds of famous blade and their oshigata which did cutting test were listed.
