KATANA

INSHU KANESAKI

Offered here on consignment is a gorgeous katana in shirasaya.  The blade itself is in excellent polish and is quite long with a nagasa of just over 29", and an overall length of over 36". The nakago is ubu or unaltered and unsigned. It is however attributed to the smith Inshu Kanesaki of the Edo Jidai per the NBTHK.

Apparently a smith who signed both Kanesaki and Kanestugu worked in or moved to Inshu province around Tenbun (1532).  His descendents continued in Inshu, with the Shodai  Inaba (Inshu) Kanesaki  founding the school approximately 1596.  The school continued until the Meji period. The Nidai began producing swords around 1625.  The  papers do not specify a later generation and the Edo period began around 1596 -1600 (depending on the source you use).  Combine these dates with the fact that the work seen in this sword exhibits the work style the shodai produced, one could surmise that this is the work of the shodai.  However, in fairness I concede that this could be also be disputed, which is so often the case when researching Japanese swords.  Sadly the information available as well as the lack of information provided by the shinsa team is, as so many times, renders a concrete answer impossible. Generally speaking most papers indicate a specific generation if other than the shodai.

What is definitive is that this is a gorgeous sword.

As stated this sword exhibits textbook work seen by the shodai ie; ko-mokume/masame hada along with sanbonsugi hamon similar to Kanemoto.  It is even written that this smith may have later signed Kanemoto.  There are lots of hataraki to be seen including chikei, ji-nie, sunagashi, inazuma etc..

Sword comes with papers and a very nice shirasaya.
