KOSHIRAE

KATANA in KOSHIRAE

Offered here on consignment is a gorgeous katana in koshirae.  The blade itself is in excellent polish and is a good length at almost 27" nagasa, and an overall length of over 34". The nakago is ubu or unaltered and is unsigned.  I hate to speculate on the maker, but the good thing about mumei is that it is sure to paper if submitted to shinsa (San Francisco Token Kai - August 2, 3, 4).  The blade itself is in excellent polish and exhibits a beautiful and irregular midare gunome.  The hada is near muji but does have some areas of pronounced ko-itame, with chikei and ji-nie. There is tons of activity found in the hamon and the boshi is midare. The O-kissaki  combined with the flamboyant hamon really gives this one a tough look. Note the tobiyaki on the kissaki.  It reminds me of an Ujifusa I once owned with one of these on each side, it was named "dragon eyes".

The Koshirae is very nice and done in handachi style fittings.  The fuchi / kabutogane are shibuichi and done in a wave motif.  The menuki are huge (2") dragons which are either brass or gold plated. The Tsuba is iron and very heavy, very fine. It has a mushroom inlaid into it made of suaka copper. The koiguchi, semegane and kojiri are all iron which was covered in gold lacquer.  The kurigata is horn.  The saya is done in a multi-colored spackling and covered with clear lacquer.  It is in very good condition, but does have a few dings and scuffs as would be expected.

A great package at a great price.
