GUNTO KOSHIRAE

GENDAI KATANA

MINAMOTO TERUHIDE

This is an excellent Gendaito by Minamoto Teruhide. I have been unable to find much information on this particular smith other than that he was from Saitam Prefecture, had a brother who was also a swordsmith.   He is recorded as a Rikugun Jumei Tosho or Army swordsmith during the war and won "First seat" in the 1941 sword exhibit.  He is recorded to make medium to high grade Gendaito.

This pristine sword is big and beefy at 27.25" in length, a mihaba of 1.25" and a kasane of a full 0.25".  The hada is tight ko-itame with profuse clouds of ji-nie along with ara-nie scattered throughout. The hamon is ko-gunome with irregular ko-ashi, nie hotsure and a few small kinsuji.  There is nice hakikake in the boshi, though it was difficult to obtain clearly in the photos.  The yasurimei is beautifully cut sujikai with kesho.

The nakago is inscribed "HA JA", a pro-war slogan meaning "Destroy Evil"

The Gunto Koshirae missing only the sarute, is also pristine as clearly shown in the photos.

This particular sword has been published in not one but two separate books. It can be seen in both of the following books:

FULLER & GREGORY'S, "SWORDSMITH'S OF JAPAN 1926 - 1945", pg. 223

JOHN SLOUGH'S, "MODERN JAPANESE SWORDSMITH'S",  pg 171

There are few Gendaito in Military Mounts as nice as this one !
