SHIRASAYA

This sword was made by Tsukamoto Masakazu, brother of the famous smith Tsukamoto Okimasa.  He was an excellent smith in his own right though his work is quite rare. The Tsukamoto family was from Koriyama city in Fukushima Prefecture. He was born in Meiji 33. He studied with his brother Okimasa at the estate of the famous Black Dragon Society leader, Toyama Mitsuru, under the tutaledge of Kasama Shigetsugu.  He won several prizes in the war era sword contests. He was also a Rikugun Jumei Toshi, or contract smith for the Japanese Army.  Masakazu's work is very rare as he mostly assisted his brother, Okimasa.

It has a nice itame hada with  choji-midare hamon and looks quite similar to the work of his famous brother, Okimasa. It is signed "Tsukamoto Masakazu" and dated  March, 1945.  The blade is in shirasaya with a wooden habaki. There are a few hike kizu or surface scratches and a couple of tiny areas of light surface rust, but no fatal flaws.

This sword received NTHK Kanteisho in Tampa, 2016.  Photo of the worksheet shown above, papers will be forwarded to the new owner when they arrive,

This is a rare opportunity to obtain a scare, high quality work by one of the famous Tsukamoto family smiths.

**NOTE: There is some discrepancy in the length designation.  The measurement I obtained is 23.75", or 1 shaku, 9 sun, 9 bu, technically a wakizashi.  However, the worksheet above says "Katana" with a 2 shaku length. I assume it will come papered as a Katana. As such it is listed as a Katana.  However, I wanted to be clear in my description.  You can make your own assumptions.
