TANTO in KOSHIRAE

Offered here on consignment is a Tanto in a lovely koshirae.  The blade is in very good condition and polish with only a few very minor  surface scratches or hike kizu , a couple of tiny pitted areas and one minute nail dragger of a chip (see photos). The nakago is suriage with one whole and one partial mekugi ana. The hada is itame with chikei. The hamon is ko-midare with ashi.  The blade comes with papers attributing it to Den Bizen Sukemori, Kansei c. 1789.

The Koshirae, also papered by the NTHK is a lovely work of art.  The saya is wrapped in leather. The fittings are all ensuite and made from silver. The katakiri bori carvings are of waves. The silver kozuka and the kojiri are signed "Masahide"  Haynes lists one maker who used this combination of characters for Masahide. He is listed as a member of the Omori family, may have also signed "Shuinsai". He lived or worked in Edo c. 1800.
