NAGINATA NAOSHI

DEN KASHU KIYOMITSU

KOTO PERIOD, EIROKU c. 1558 KAGA

NTHK PAPERS

This Naginata Naoshi has been attributed to Den Kashu Kiyomitsu of Kaga Province. Kashu Kiyomitsu was a well regarded smith and schoo;, whose works were rated as high as Chujosaku by Fujishiro for their quality.  Receiving the "Den" attribution simply means that there are either uncommon characteristics seen in the blade or not enough expected characteristics to be absolutely certain of a particular generation.  The NTHK papers state the period designation as "Eiroku 1558".  There were two Kiyomitsu working in this period, "Magouemonnoio" and "Maggobeinojo" I can only presume that the judges were indicating one or the other but were not absolutely certain which. There is tons of information regarding this school found on the internet.  Instead of writing all of this in my own words, I am including several links which should provide all the information one could ask for.

The blade itself is very nice, much nicer in hand than the photos depict. Even the tiniest of kitae ware reflect light during photography, making them look much worse than they do in hand. The areas in the photos which look bright as stars are barely noticeable in hand.  The sword has a pronounced Itame hada mixed with swirls of Mokume and lots of chikei.  There is sunagashi, hakikake in the boshi, ara nie, etc.. Can you see the face in the hada ?

The sword is really quite nice and would provide a lot of enjoyment with so much activity to study.
