WAKIZASHI

YASUSADA

Wakizashi signed Yamato no Kami Yasusada.  I have been unable to determine whether this may be the shodai or nidai's work.  There were only three generations and very few works of the 3rd generation are known to exist. The works of the shodai and nidai are said to be very similar, in fact works of the nidai were unclear until a sword was discovered signed, "Nidaime Yamato no Kami Yasusada mei kore" or "This is the mei of the second generation Yasusada". The shodai and nidai were rated ryowazamono/wazamono and josaku /chujosaku respectively. Both obviously very good smith's.  Both work in Musashi provence c. 1648 / 1673 respectively.  The original kuni of the shodai was Echizen, and he was said to have been a member of the Shodai Yasutsugu Mon.

This wakizashi is in good polish and looks ten times better in hand than in the photos. This is due in part to being forged with a slightly coarse grain in the hada.  When photographing a sword with coarse grain every tiny area reflects light into the camera causing it to stand out BOLDLY.  In hand, the sword is much more subtle. There is a small area of kittae ware on the ura side (see photos) but nothing detrimental, fatal or substantial enough to prevent papering. It has however, resulted in the sword being offered at barely over the cost of polish and shirasaya. Overall the sword is gorgeous with lots and lots of activity to enjoy. The hada is masame in the shinogi and itame/ko-mokume in the ji. The hamon is gunome midare with lots of sunagashi, nijuba, nie sake, etc.. The Boshi is midare Komi Yasitsune with nice hakekake.  The nakago is ubu, signed and has one mekugi ana.

The sword comes in new shirasaya and custom one piece gold foiled habaki.
