IRON MOKKO GATA

2.875" (7.3cm) X 2.625" (6.67cm) x 0.187" (0.48CM)

Nakago ana: approx. 1.1875" (2.97cm) X 0.375" (0.94cm)

Beautiful forged Iron Mokko Gata Tsuba with a motif of grapevines done in nunome. The leaves and tendrils are done in gold and the grapes are silver. The inlay is all intact with nothing missing. There are a couple of areas where the tendrils wrap over the mimi that have been a little flattened and worn over the years. Note as well on the thickness measurement, it was taken at the rim and is a little thinner where the inner part was cut out (see photos). The plate was well forged and very dense, as evidenced by not only the Toketsu or iron bones seen in the mimi, but by the weight. It is not a huge tsuba but is very heavy for it's size. The absolute best part of this tsuba aside from it's overall great forging and condition is the patination. The patination is a perfect deep, dark, rich chocolate which looks wet (see photos).

If you like it, do not hesitate. My daughter has her eye on it and has informed me that it would make a nice addition to her tsuba collection. (She is eleven and has a dozen tsuba of her own)
