Large, very nice iron Choshu Tsuba done in sukadashi bori. The motif is a timeless one known as "Musashi no". These are grasses with dewdrops on the battlefield and are generally associated with Sekigahara. They evoke a number of Bushi and Buddhist connotations, ie; they bend and flow with the opposing forces of nature, they symbolize life itself as they are born, live, wither and die, etc., etc.

The Choshu school of tsubako was the largest of all schools and was formed sometime in the early 1600's.  The Nakai Ke was formed by Tomotsune around the mid Edo era, and their ke survived up to the mid 1800's. The jigane is well forged as is typical for later Edo Choshu work, and the patina is a rich black, which appears molten. It is highlighted by simple drops of gold which represent dew drops.  This tsuba exhibits a lot of intricate detail which was difficult to capture in the photos.
