TSUKA

Handachi style tsuka for a wakizashi. The tsuka has fine white same beneath the black ito and sports a brass fuchi kashira patinated in a suaka(pumpkin colored copper)and black mottled finish.

The finish is reminiscent of Negoro Lacquer work. Negoro lacquer work consists of layers of black lacquer being applied, and finally a layer of red lacquer (see negoro example photo). Then the red lacquer is partially scraped away exposing areas of the black lacquer. The resulting worn surface embodies the esoteric principle of wabi-sabi.

The menuki are warm black shakudo with soft gold accents in the shape of a kabuto(helmet) sitting on a tachi.

The condition is very good with an old ding to the fuchi and some tiny edge-wear to the kashira.
