Goto Mitsumasa
NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon
Born in 1836 and died in 1904, Goto Mitsumasa (H.05239) was the son of Goto Benjo (H.00172), who was the 5th Hanzaemon master. Mitsumasa became the 6th generation master of the Goto Hanzaemon family upon the death of his father, Benjo in 1852.
Mitsumasa was the nephew of Goto Ichijo, and the student of Goto Hojo (H.01596), who was the 16th mainline Goto master. Mitsumasa worked in the late Goto and Ichijo style.
Mistsumasa became surrogate for Ichijo’s work during the latter part of Ichijo’s life. After the Imperial restoration of 1868, Mitsmasa became director of the Japanese mint. This is according to the Kinko Meikan, by Masamoto and Kokubo.
This is a rare opportunity to own one of Mitsumasa’s works. It is very rare for one of his works to become available outside Japan.
This gorgeous kozuka depicts a floral motif reminiscent of Goto Ichijos work. The base material is shibuichi with inlays of gold and silver. It is signed Goto Mitsumasa with Kao.
The kozuka comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Kanteisho (papers), and a custom fitted box.
