HAMANO SHOZUI, TIGER

MEI: SHOZUI, MADE AT AGE 68

Lovely kozuka on copper base with shakudo and gold highlights. The theme is a Tiger beside a rock.

The founder of the Hamano school was Shōzui, who was a student of Nara Toshinaga. Shozui was very successful on his own and had many students. His work combined the styles of Nara and Yokoya schools, and typically featured larger sized motifs than the Nara school.

The Nara Sansaku or three great Nara masters were Toshinaga, Sugiura Joi and Tschiya Yasuchika. Shozui is considered the fourth gret master of Nara and together they are called the Nara Shintenno.
