These menuki depict Nata. Nata loosely translates as hatchet. They are additionally called Hanagatana or flower sword. In the past nata were also known as kibikuri or head cutters. The term “head cutter” is old made up nonsense to seel these to tourists. Much cooler to bring home a “head Chopper” than a flower cutter.
There were varying levels of quality seen in nata, from the very basic to incredibly well made.
