SADAICHI (貞一), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Nara – “Settsu no Kuni-jū
Gassan Minamoto Takateru saku + kaō” (摂津国住月山源貴照作), “Washū
Miwayama Semaigawa no ue Gassan Minamoto Sadaichi kore o saku + kaō” (和州三輪山狭井河之上月山源貞一作之), real name Gassan Noboru
(月山昇), born November 8th 1907 in Ōsaka into the newer Gassan school
that had been revived and well-established by then by his father Sadakatsu
(月山貞勝, 1869-1943) and his grandfather of Sadakazu (月山貞一, 1836-
1918), Sadaichi started his training as swordsmith when his grandfather
Sadakazu died, he was then eleven years old and his father Sadakatsu
introduced him not only into the Gassan, but also into the gokaden techniques, first he signed first with Sadamitsu (貞光), in 1929, he and his father forged Emperor Shôwa a so-called daigenshi-tō (大元師刀), the sword for him in his function as supreme commander of army and navy, in 1943, Sadaichi was 36 years old, the family and school moved from Ōsaka to the city of Kashihawa (橿原) in Nara Prefecture where they erected the Gassan Nihontō Tanren Dōjō (月山日本刀鍛錬道場), his father died shortly later and Sadaichi took over the family and became also responsible for the guntō forge affiliated to the Ōsaka Army Arsenal (Ōsaka Rikugun Zōheishō, 大阪陸軍造兵廠), it is said that he changed his name to Sadateru (貞輝) in 1944, after World War II, he received his now obligatory official licence as a swordsmith in 1954 when he was 47 years old, two years later he changed his smith name from Sadamitsu to Takateru (貴照), in 1965 he established The new Gassan Nihontō Tanren Dōjō in the city of Sakurai (桜井) in Nara Prefecture and the name change to Sadaichi took place in 1966, he received the ranks of mukansa, itangible Cultural Property of Nara Prefecture, and eventually ningen-kokuhō in April 1971, he also received the Order of the Rising Sun 4th class (kyokujitsu- shōjushō, 旭日小綬章), Sadaichi’s gō was Ta ́a (太阿), he died April 1st 1995 at the age of 87, kihin-jōi (Akihide)

Swords by Living National Treasures such as Sadamitsu/Sadaichi are rarely offered for sale outside Japan and most collectors outside Japan are completely unaware of their inherent value.
