SUKEMORI

GENDAITO

Pre-war Gendaito by the swordsmith Sukemori. Sukemori was born in 1883 and trained under the tutelage of Hiraga Morikuni (see Slough’s pg 114).  He received many awards in pre-war exhibitions, and in 1941 he joined the Torijo Tantosha to forge swords for the war effort.  He was known to make medium to high grade gendaito, and may be referenced in both Hawleys and the Nihonto Meikan.  Sukemori passed away in 1968.

This sword was well forged gendaito.  The hada is ko-itame with some chikei seen, which is unusual for gendaito. The hamon beginning at the hamachi is ko-midare and and as it reaches the monouchi area transitions to a gentle ko-notare based on suguha.

This sword is published in John Slough’s, “Modern Japanese Swordsmith’s” on page 164.
