Very nice ubu naginata by Shodai Shimada Sukemune. Sukemune was the student of the famous Tsuda Sukehiro who was the originator of the hamon known as “Toran-ba”.

SUKEMUNE (助宗), 1st gen., Kanbun (寛文, 1661-1673), Shinano – “Shinshū Matsumoto-jū Sukemune” (信州松本住助宗), “Shimada Kojūrō Sukemune” (嶋田小十郎助宗), “Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Hirosuke” (越後守藤原広助), son of the 3rd gen. Sukemune, he moved later from Suruga to Shinano province where he settled at the vicinity of the Zenkōji (善光寺) in Matsumoto (松本), later he studied also in Ōsaka under the 1st gen. Sukehiro (助広) whereupon he changed his name to Hirosuke (広助), finely forged but strong jigane, gunome-midare, notare, he also added a chrysanthemum and the character “Ichi” (一) to his signatures.

This naginata comes with shirasaya and NBTHK papers from the 1980 US Shinsa.
