Very nice shinsakuto by the sword smith Nobushige.  Nobushige was born in 1923, in Osaka provence.  He began his training as a swordsmith at age 13.  In 1939, he was granted the title, “Rikugun Jumei Tosho” and worked for the army during the war. He is said to have been commissioned to forge swords for the royal family as well as high ranking officers.  Sword production was not allowed after the war and it wasn’t until 1954 the Nobushige was once again licensed and returned to sword smithing. His bio can be found in the Gendaito Meikan.

The sword itself is beautiful.  The wide mihaba gives a sense of real power. Tight Itame hada dominates the ji, with small areas of mokume dispersed along it’s length. The hamon is an O-gunome and there is ample chikei and nie dispersed throughout the hamon and ji There are a few hike kizu or light surface scratches, but no pitting or flaws.  Guaranteed against fatal flaws.

A wonderful example of modern era sword smithing, forged in 1981.

The Mon engraved on the habaki is known as Ken-katabami mon. It was used by many families. Also known as the “Ronin’s Mon”, it is also the mon of Muso Jiki-den Eishin-ryu whose founder was a ronin…
