TSUBA ANTLER CROWN

DEER ANTLER TSUBA

An unusual and rarely seen tsuba made from the crown of a deer antler.  I have reservations regarding the functionality of this piece, yet it is unusual, completely organic and very naturalistic, very wabi-sabi.

This little tsuba came from the estate of an antique dealer who had married and lived in Japan immediately post war. When he returned to the states in the late 50’s he brought many tsuba home with him.  Over the years most were sold, however he had kept about a dozen tsuba which he considered “his” collection and they were never offered for sale.  One of them was this tsuba.  When his widow was questioned regarding this tsuba, she explained his thoughts on it. He had always said that even though this tsuba was far from his best or most expensive, the rustic feel drew him to it.

Tsuba size: 2″ (5.08cm) x 2 5/16″ (5.87cm) x 1/4″(.634cm) thick.
