KANAYAMA

GOLD HITSUANA

2.56″ X 2.56″ X 0.21875″ (5.556mm thick)

With the full understanding of how difficult it is to pinpoint an attribution to Kanayama or any of the Owari based schools for that matter, it is my opinion this tsuba Kanayama work.

The term “old” is relative to the context, and here that context would be in comparison to some of the oldest, Muromachi period Kanayama.  We know according to Sasano, Kanayama works were made and evolved through the Edo period.

Please, let me be clear, I have never entertained the idea that this was pre-Edo work, but definitely Edo work.

This tsuba is very pleasing to the eye and obviously a previous owner thought very highly of it to have had gold hitsu-ana inserts installed.
