SHIRASAYA

Wakizashi inscribed Yashu Ju Yukihide.  It is dated using the zodiac calendar, Keio Gan Ushi toshi or Keio first year of the Ox (ushi).

He was also known as Iwai Yuki Hide according to the Connoisseur’s Guide.  Iwai is a town in Shimotsuke or Tochigi. He was a student of Yosokawa Masayoshi who in turn was a top student of Yosokawa Masahide.  This is on page 283 of the Connoisseur’s Guide. He is also listed in the Toko Taikan as a 1.5-million-yen smith on p. 707.  His work is also on p. 650 of the Shinshinto Taikan. The judges gave this wakizashi a score of 72 pts.

The polish is a little faded. There is one tiny nail dragger (chip) on the edge, some light scuffing/surface scratches, oxidation and stains.  There is abundant hatarake (activity) which can be enjoyed.

The sword comes in shirasaya.
